Remember your Baptism

Matthew 3:13-17
3:13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. 14 John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” 15 But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now; for it is proper for us in this way to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. 16 And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.” [NRSA]

Remember Your Baptism Ritual – It is necessary to remember we are the Baptized, the chosen for a purpose of telling the nations the Good News of Jesus Christ.

THE NEED OF BAPTISM

Is it a technicality? — all sort of exceptions: infants, children, mental capacities … story of 92-year-old who had not been baptized and on hospice

Is it once in a lifetime? — different denominations understand it differently, for UMC it is once-in-a-lifetime.

Does the method make a difference? Baptism, immersion, pouring, sprinkling.

WHAT ARE WE DOING WITH BAPTISM?

Adoption into the family of God. – This is my Son, my child, children of God.

Confession of sin – part one: recognize that I am a sinner and broken in need of what Christ alone offers us.

Affirmation of faith — part two: Confirm that Christ has what i/we need.
