Philippians 3:17-4:1 “Citizenship? Act Like One” 02/28/2010

3:17 Brothers and sisters, join in imitating me, and observe those who live according to the example you have in us. 18 For many live as enemies of the cross of Christ; I have often told you of them, and now I tell you even with tears. 19 Their end is destruction; their god is the belly; and their glory is in their shame; their minds are set on earthly things. 20 But our citizenship is in heaven, and it is from there that we are expecting a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. 21 He will transform the body of our humiliation that it may be conformed to the body of his glory, by the power that also enables him to make all things subject to himself. 4:1 Therefore, my brothers and sisters, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, my beloved.

Living in a time of war, economic uncertainty, natural disasters, political unrest..
Paul says:
Remember your citizenship is in HEAVEN.

This world is not my home I’m just passing through
My treasures are laid up somewhere beyond the blue
The angels beckon me from heaven’s open door
And I can’t feel at home in this world anymore.

Identification, Permission to come and go, Not easily acquired – to be protected

Follow the Example of others who are faithful
Discern between those who live as citizens of this world
body, pride, self.
Promise: Our bodies though humiliated, though suffer, will be confirmed through Christ.
stand FIRM..

My heart belongs to God.. above all else.
Countless times the Apostle Paul’s Roman citizenship gave him rights and privileges
but it was not his salvation.

We are thankful for our freedom to worship, but if we are not placing our passion in worship..
We are thankful for our country, but if we are not reaching out to those who are lost…
We are thankful for our rights, but if we are sitting on the side line waiting for someone else…
We are thankful for the church, but if we think it is OURS and not Christ’s….
We are grateful for those who have made our worship possible today, but if we are not making way for others to worship tomorrow..

God has entrusted the citizens of the kingdom to represent us, in this land, in this time,…

What is holding you up today?
Your money? Your accomplishments? Your health? Your Government? Your determination?

TAKE YOUR Stand in Christ.. you are a citizen of God’s people… living &working on a green card
Get to work.

ACTION: This week, you will be with someone who might need one of God’s very own citizens to reach out and comfort, bless, heal, encourage, love, forgive, or lead… STAND UP FOR CHRIST– your citizenship is at stake.
And the world will be bless through your sharing Jesus Christ.

Matthew 6:1-6,16-18 “Wash Your Face” 02-21-2010

6:1 "Beware of practicing your piety before others in order to be seen by them; for then you have no reward from your Father in heaven. 2 "So whenever you give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be praised by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. 3 But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your alms may be done in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. 5 "And whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, so that they may be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. 6 But whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

6:16 "And whenever you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces so as to show others that they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. 17 But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, 18 so that your fasting may be seen not by others but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. (MT 6:1-6,16-20: NRSV)

practicing your piety, without being seen

give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you

pray, do not so that they may be seen by others.

fast, do not look dismal,

19 Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; 20 but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Don’t make worship about you.. its about God.

Don’t make spiritual growth about your strength

Don’t make Christian living about your success

Matt Redman _ The Heart of Worship

Verse 1: When the music fades, All is stripped away, And I simply come, Longing just to bring, Something that’s of worth

That will bless your heart I’ll bring You more than a song, For a song in itself Is not what You have required, You search much deeper within Through the way things appear, You’re looking into my heart I’m coming back to the heart of worship, And it’s all about You, It’s all about You, Jesus, I’m sorry, Lord, for the thing I’ve made it When it’s all about You. It’s all about You, Jesus

If you heart is in Christ, there will be your reward, treasure, and prize.

Wesley is big fan of piety.. practices of moving our relationship toward perfection/wholeness

We may not be perfect in this lifetime, but we press on to make it our prize

We practice actions of what we know in our head, that our heart is called to do, In an effort to train our heart and head to move toward God, more often.

The Piety will not save us, but it is our practice toward claiming/living the salvation God gives us…

SO WHAT: Lenten practices of giving up sins/distraction or taking on spiritual disciplines—these are our practicing what we will be doing for eternity, as made possible fully by the grace, power, and love of God through Jesus Christ, empowered by God Holy Spirit.

So practice well.. as an Olympian would practice

Give even though no one will ever know or see it or claim it

Pray because you trust it’s the power of listening and speaking with God

Fast, don’t let it show that you are giving up sin – let is be seen that you are a child of God – period.

God of wilderness and water, your Son was baptized and tempted as we are.
Guide us through this season, that we may not avoid struggle,
but open ourselves to blessing, through the cleansing depths of repentance
and the heaven-rending words of the Spirit. Amen.

Artist of souls, you sculpted a people for yourself out of the rocks of wilderness and fasting.
Help us as we take up your invitation to prayer and simplicity, that the discipline of these forty days
may sharpen our hunger for the feast of your holy friendship, and whet our thirst for the living water you offer
through Jesus Christ. Amen.

God of the covenant, in the glory of the cross your Son embraced the power of death and broke its hold over your people.
In this time of repentance, draw all people to yourself, that we who confess Jesus as Lord may put aside the deeds of death
and accept the life of your kingdom. Amen.

God of the living, through baptism we pass from the shadow of death to the light of the resurrection.
Remain with us and give us hope that, rejoicing in the gift of the Spirit who gives life to our mortal flesh,
we may be clothed with the garment of immortality, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Beloved friends, in this season of repentance and healing, we accept God’s invitation to be ever mindful of the needs of others,
offering our prayers on behalf of God’s community in the church and the world.

Fill us with your strength to resist the seductions of our foolish desires and the tempter’s vain delights that we may walk in obedience and righteousness, rejoicing in you with an upright heart. Amen.

God of deliverance and freedom, you taught the people of Israel to acknowledge that all things come from your bountiful hand.
Deepen our faith so that we may resist temptation and, in the midst of trial, proclaim that Jesus Christ is Lord, now and for ever. Amen.

2 Corinthians 3:12-4:2 “Freedom in the Spirit” 02.14.2010 BRUMC – Boy Scout Sunday

3:12 Since, then, we have such a hope, we act with great boldness, 3:13 not like Moses, who put a veil over his face to keep the people of Israel from gazing at the end of the glory that was being set aside. 3:14 But their minds were hardened. Indeed, to this very day, when they hear the reading of the old covenant, that same veil is still there, since only in Christ is it set aside. 3:15 Indeed, to this very day whenever Moses is read, a veil lies over their minds; 3:16 but when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. 3:17 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 3:18 And all of us, with unveiled faces, seeing the glory of the Lord as though reflected in a mirror, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another; for this comes from the Lord, the Spirit. 4:1 Therefore, since it is by God’s mercy that we are engaged in this ministry, we do not lose heart. 4:2 We have renounced the shameful things that one hides; we refuse to practice cunning or to falsify God’s word; but by the open statement of the truth we commend ourselves to the conscience of everyone in the sight of God. (2Cor3: NRSV)

Thank God for our Freedom

To be in the spirit is to be free..

In repelling you wear a safety harness with someone on the ground to belay your climb.. to are strapped in tight but you are actually more free to climb.

Choosing to be in the Spirit..

Being in the community of faith makes it much easier.

With all the flaws of people, God promises to be with us where two or more are gathered.

Removing temptation and choosing how not to live, who not to entrust, and where to direct our living.. helps follow the compass toward the direction of the Spirit.

When we are engaged in ministry. The 5 Practices are how we engage in ministry.

When faced with temptation we choose God. If we are in the fellowship, in the light, above the table, honest with our actions/choices we have the accountability to stay with the Spirit.

Wind blows.. we have to be ready to change too..

Be in fellowship, removed temptation, engage in ministry,

uses these to CHOOSE Christ daily

SO WHAT: So we are here for you and you here for us… as we all seek Christ together.

Be in fellowship, removed temptation, engage in ministry,

uses these to CHOOSE Christ daily

Luke 5: 1-11 “Get Away From Me” Discipleship is trusting Christ sees our best even in our worst.

1 Once while Jesus was standing beside the lake of Gennesaret, and the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, 2 he saw two boats there at the shore of the lake; the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. 3 He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little way from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat. 4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch." 5 Simon answered, "Master, we have worked all night long but have caught nothing. Yet if you say so, I will let down the nets." 6 When they had done this, they caught so many fish that their nets were beginning to break. 7 So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both boats, so that they began to sink. 8 But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, "Go away from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man!" 9 For he and all who were with him were amazed at the catch of fish that they had taken; 10 and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. Then Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching people." 11 When they had brought their boats to shore, they left everything and followed him.

The beach… what is it like? Salty? Breezy? Sandy? Play or Work?

For some it is work, fishy, cold, freezing, and far from a place of retreat.

In a time of failure and disappointment Jesus meets would be disciples

They had fished all night,

The nets had been cleaned, mended and put away

It was now morning and the fish would be on the move.

According to Peter the timing is not right.

The circumstances were not right.

The moment was tried and over.

Jesus calls for them to go out into the deep.

The deep things.. NOT the weather, NOT the scores, NOT the gossip

Fears, Failures, Sadness, Pain, Guilt, Shame, etc.

Who can help us when we are in too deep?

Out of the deep, comes the catch of a lifetime.

Peter, James, John and Zebedee had never had this!

Some take this as a lesson in Abundance or personal wealth.

If that were the point, the disciples would not leave their nets.

The point is about being personally confronted by Jesus Christ.

They called for the others to come help, for the catch is so great

The nets were beginning to break..

More than they could handle, alone

More than their tools/talents could manage.

So much THEY were about to sink.

There is a sinking of the self, in the being CAUGHT UP in Christ.

Peter saw it.

Peter got it.

His response was: GET AWAY FROM ME.

His self-awareness in the glory of Christ shows our sinfulness.

Our tendency is to run from the truth.

We avoid the hurt, disappointment, grief, and faults…

Jesus calls us in these very low moments to the highest work.

To be a disciple, is to be a follower of Christ.

To be a follower, means that our self sinks into the sea of Christ.

Our boat is intact, but clear of our limitations

Clear of Christ’s carrying us.

From now on, you will use the skills that you already know to reach

People.. for Jesus Christ.

ACTION PLAN: The next time you have urge to say NO,

What will it take to say, I will follow? Jesus knows the way, trust him.
