1Corthintians 12:12-27 Key: The Body of Christ “I Have Need of You” 01 24 2010

12 For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. 14 Indeed, the body does not consist of one member but of many. 15 If the foot would say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. 16 And if the ear would say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? 18 But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. 19 If all were a single member, where would the body be? 20 As it is, there are many members, yet one body. 21 The eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you,” nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” 22 On the contrary, the members of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23 and those members of the body that we think less honorable we clothe with greater honor, and our less respectable members are treated with greater respect; 24 whereas our more respectable members do not need this. But God has so arranged the body, giving the greater honor to the inferior member, 25 that there may be no dissension within the body, but the members may have the same care for one another. 26 If one member suffers, all suffer together with it; if one member is honored, all rejoice together with it. 27 Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. (NRSV)

Though we are many, Though we are different, we are members of one body… That’s the way it is with Christ
That’s the way it is in the Spirit

Some are the Hands and Feet of Jesus… taking the word into action Some are the Eyes who look with vision
Some are the Hears that hear the cries of the needy and oppressed Some are the Liver and Galbladder who help process the toxins Some are the vocal cords that sing praises
Some always seem to work in waste management..
How boring it would be around here, if conformity was our nature and mission! Christ preserves the uniqueness of the individual and calls us all in one direction..

How many men/women? left/right handed? Born in Fannin, in GA, in south? in US? in other
What if we all like the same things.. the same way.. at the same time.. My charge is not to make the church pleasing to anyone, but to guide all the parts.

“We are in this church for Jesus Christ.”
“We are in this church for one another”
“I am here for you. You are here for me.”
“We are here for the parts that are missing, too.”
We need folks to say YES when they are asked to help..
not: That is above us.. That is beneath us..
not: That is boring. Done that – have the trophy
not: Am I in the spot light? Am I in the background?

The Church at Corinth was not always getting along. Some folks were working against other members and even Paul.
Paul reminds the church that God has arranged us a Body… with Christ as the head.

Don’t work to divide, Work to strengthen one another. See the best in one another, where there are faults, work together for Good in Christ.
Are the people in our family related to us, even if they don’t live on our road? Are the people of Haiti part of our body? even though they don’t live in our county?.
Are the people who look at the world differently from us any less value to God? Does God look at us with any less worth when we focus on our differences and devices?
What will I do when I see/hear/experience someone dividing the body?

I am a vital part of the body, You are a vital part of Christ’s body. Do we devour one another, or do we take and share the common cup that saves us all?
What will I do when I see/hear/experience someone

“We are in this church for Jesus Christ.”
“We are in this church for one another in Christ.”
“I am here FOR you. You are here FOR me in Christ.”
“We are here for the parts that are missing, too.”
How will I share the talents I have and gifts that are to be given to me to share?

We come to the table to find that we are all different pieces, broken & sinful…

no matter what tears us apart, Christ longs to hold us together. Let us come to the table as one.

John 1:1-18 ‘The Shines, Even Now!’ 01/03/10

Theme: What begin with Creation is a Way to God, it is a light the ends darkness and enlightens the world.

1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 1:2 He was in the beginning with God. 1:3 All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. 6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. 8 He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. 9 The true light, which enlightens everyone was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him. 11 He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. 12 But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God. 14 And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth. 15 (John testified to him and cried out, "This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks ahead of me because he was before me.’") 16 From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. 17 The law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God. It is God the only Son, who is close to the Father’s heart, who has made him known.

From the Beginning, God has a plan with a purpose.

Long before we had life or cognitive awareness of self and life, God author’s life and life’s purpose.

According to John’s Gospel: God works with light and word.

Light: makes things visible, illumination

Word: What makes the light? The Word makes awareness possible

Where the light shines the word, life comes into being.

At the core of creation may indeed appear as a grand BANG of AMEN.

Let it be so. The Word Spoken: and the explosive power of God is released beyond the scope of any telescope, probe or physical journey of exploration or explanation.

The word: “Amen” does not mean, the end. It means: Let it be so.

Let it be. Let it live.

Let it have life, and have it abundantly.

Let it be the truth. Let it become.

>Interruption of this Theological Discourse with the introduction of John the Baptizer.. a witness testifying to the coming light.

His work is our work: To tell the world that God’s purpose & will

Is for us to LIVE

IN relationship with God

Through Jesus Christ… the word.

The gift that each of us is given that different from all creation

-Is our mind, our rational, creative, intentional, cognitive mind.

We are enlightened.. and called to enlighten others…

New Years Resolve: to become bright and shine for Christ.

In “knowing” Christ:

We see, by faith, the type of relationship God desires for us

Seeing God’s Glory through relationship

Full of Grace.. Love un-earned and un-deserved

Full of Truth.. Wholeness in Certainty of that Love

The Life for Rules and physical behavior needs grace to finish it.

Grace and Truth are found in Jesus Christ.

Note: vs18 Moses see’s God’s back-side, and Paul see’s the light.

Peter, James and John, Moses and Elijah see the dove, Hebrews saw Pillar of smoke and fire… More of a statement about the nature, purpose and relationship of Christ.

SO WHAT: Make all the New Year Promised You Want. There is none greater or more urgently needed to be fulfilled than is the need to make our relationship with God and God’s people.
